Exotic perfumes, timeless airs and siren voices are enchanted the very walls of the Satyajit Ray Auditorium at the Grand Finale of the 3rd edition of the IIGF. On the 4th Dec 2016. Audiences were treated to a spicy ensemble of fantastic female artists from Europe, Oceania and India, at the world-premiere of O' Shakuntala: The Plight of Lovelessness. Inspired by the ancient tale of Abhjnanashakuntalam by Kalidasa, this multicultural musical odyssey highlights the perils and tragedies of a loveless society, whilst simultaneously celebrating the myriad forms of love, from heartbreak to ecstasy.
Highlighting vocalists and the diverse songlines they carry, O' Shakuntula featured Mediterranean love ballads, Indian Classical music, Thumri, Tagore and Baul, alongside Celtic Folk songs and original Contemporary compositions. Backed by a fleet of accomplished jazz and classical musicians from Kolkata and beyond, Anandi Bhattacharya (India), Carola Ortiz (Spain), Naomi Jean (Australia), Katy Murphy (Australia) and Monia Rekos (Poland), with Bengali narration by Chandrima Roy, delivered a soiree full of heart to the City of Joy.
2nd Dec, 2016, South African musician Derek Gripper has spent much of his career translating highly complex kora compositions for classical guitar, while Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya invented the 'Trinity of Slide Guitars' an awe-inspiring innovation that was designed to play and represent Indian Classical Music on the slide guitar. Not only did his innovations take the world by storm, his style of playing encompassed and adapted smoothly across myriad genres. Each has redefined the styles of music possible on his instrument, inventing new playing techniques and developing bold new repertoires. Both Gripper and Bhattacharya like to collaborate with musicians from cultural traditions very different from their own; in this project, they brought their elegant and virtuosic string styles into glorious, inventive dialogue.

Messages from the stalwarts for IIGF 2015
Dear Debashishji,
I am very happy to note that you have planned a 5 day Guitar festival in honour of your Guru - Living Legend Pt. Brij Bhushan Kabraji. My association with Brij Bhushanji goes back several years and decades when we first did "The Call Of The Valley". He is not only very well versed in playing the Guitar but also knows about the finer nuances of Music. The most endearing part of his personality is he is a very humble, simple and down to earth human being. I regret, I will not be able to come on the day of the inauguration of the festival tributes to him but, my Good Wishes are with you all on this very very prestigious day.
My blessing and best wishes to you also, for taking your Guru's music forward through this big five days India International Guitar Festival.
Musically,
Shiv Kumar Sharma
My Dear Debashish,
I was very happy to hear your voice yesterday. Please let me know if my words are useful to you.
Here are some notes about your festival.
I became aware of the music of Maestro Brij Bushan Kabra in the 1970's. Prior to this, the only music on Slide Guitar was the recordings of the Mississippi Blues guitarists. I was amazed by Brij ji's artistry. Subsequently I was introduced to the music and playing of Maestro Debashish Bhattacharya. It was clear to me from the outset, that Debashish Ji was a disciple of Brij Ji, but that Debashish Ji has taken the Slide Guitar to new heights of artistry. I am delighted that he will create a festival to the honour of his Guru, and I send my deepest congratulations and blessings for this great event.
